Prof. Ibrahim Al Alwan is a graduate of King Saud University. Prof. Al Alwan joined the College of Medicine, Riyadh (COM-R), King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2004, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2012. He was appointed Dean, COM-R, KSAU-HS (2010-2014). Prof. Al Alwan is founder of the Saudi Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program at the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), established in 2004; and served as Chairman until 2012. He has also served the medical education field locally as member of the Pediatric Saudi Board, initiating and chairing the Saudi Board for Pediatric Endocrinology and the Pediatric Endocrine chapter of the Saudi Pediatric Association. Internationally, he served as President of Association for Medical Education in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (AMEEMR) from year 2011-2020.

Khalid Hussain is the Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology. Since joining Sidra in 2016 he has established the clinical endocrine and diabetes service. His expertise is in childhood glucose disorders such as severe forms of hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus. He leads a multidisciplinary team (consultant endocrinologists and diabetologists, insulin pump experts, endocrine nurses, diabetic educators and highly specialized dieticians) providing care for children with all endocrine conditions including diabetes. Specialist clinics for children with all types of diabetes are now established and children with diabetes are managed with the latest technological advances. Sidra aims to create a word class center for children with diabetes and hypoglycemia providing the highest standard of clinical care.
Prior to joining Sidra, Dr. Hussain was the GOSHCC (Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity) Professor of Pediatric Metabolic Endocrinology at The Institute of Child Health, University College London and Honorary Consultant Pediatric Endocrinologist at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London UK. Dr. Hussain qualified in Medicine from Glasgow University in Scotland UK and then trained in Neonatology, Metabolic medicine and Pediatric Endocrinology in London (Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital) and Australia (Monash Medical Center, Melbourne).
At Sidra Medicine, Dr. Hussain’s research focuses on understanding the epidemiology, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of childhood diabetes. His research is funded by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and Sidra Internal Research Fund (SIRF). Dr. Hussain is an internationally recognized expert in the field of childhood hypoglycemia and rare types of diabetes mellitus. He has described several novel disorders relating to hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus. He has published extensively in the field of glucose physiology with more than 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high impact journals including NEJM, Science, Nature Genetics, Cell Metabolism, EMBO, JCI, PNAS, HMG, AJHG, Diabetes, Diabetologia and JCEM.
